Install day

A day on the wall, step by step

This is the order for a room. A bigger job is the same steps, repeated wall by wall.

A living room with a sofa, armchairs and a brick fireplace covered in plastic sheeting

Cover and clear

We arrive, walk the room with you and cover the floor and what stays. Switch plates come off and the power to the room is turned off at the panel.

  • Floors and furniture covered

  • Switch plates and vent covers off

  • Power off at the panel before any cut near an outlet

A hand smoothing a skim of compound across a white wall with a trowel

Check and prep the wall

The wall is checked for sound paint, damp and old paste. Dents are filled, rough spots sanded and the surface primed or sized for the paper in the room.

  • Moisture and surface check

  • Fill, sand and dust off

  • Primer or size, then dry time

A roller tray, brush and can on a drop cloth beside blue tape on a baseboard

Paste and hang

A plumb line goes up first. Paper is pasted as its maker says, and each drop is matched at the seam, smoothed from the center out and wiped as it goes.

  • Plumb line struck first

  • Paste read from the data sheet

  • Each seam matched and checked

A roll of masking tape and a small brush on brown kraft paper

Trim and clean up

At ceiling, baseboard and casing the paper is cut to a straightedge with a fresh blade. Scraps are bagged, paste is wiped off the trim and the plates go back on.

  • Straightedge and a fresh blade

  • Switch plates back on

  • Scraps and tape taken with us

Before and after

What helps on the day

  • Before we arrive

Clear small items off the walls and shelves, and tell us about pets and the age of the house.

  • While we work

Keep the room closed to pets and children while paste is wet. We will ask if the room needs to stay warm.

  • When we leave

We walk the walls with you. Seams are checked again a day later, and any that lift are on us to fix.

Questions about the day

Do I need to be home?

Someone should be there to let us in and to walk the room with us at the start and end. After that, you can come and go.

Can I stay in the house while you work?

Yes. Paste has a smell for a few hours, and the room we are in is closed off. Open a window in the next room if you can.

What if the wall turns out to need more?

We stop and show you. A change such as a skim coat is priced in writing before we do it.

See your wall before the day

Book a wall check or text a photo of the wall. The install day is planned from what we see.
