Grasscloth, weaves and murals
Papers that need a plan before the first cut
Natural weaves and scenic panels are hung differently from printed paper. We plan the whole wall first.
Grasscloth and natural weaves
Seams show by design and shade varies from roll to roll. We number the drops, alternate their direction when the maker says to and keep paste off the face.
Drops laid out and numbered on the floor
Shade checked across rolls before the first cut
Seams left visible, never forced
Murals and scenic panels
A mural arrives as numbered panels. We dry-fit them on the floor, find the wall's center and hang from there so nothing lands on a corner.
Panels dry-fit and checked against the wall
Hung from the center out
Outlets and switches cut last
Wall prep for both
Both show every bump, so the wall gets a smooth skim, a primer and, for grasscloth, the maker's liner when it asks for one.
Skim coat where the wall needs it
Liner paper if the maker calls for it
What to expect
Honest things about natural paper
Seams show
Natural weaves are made in strips, so seams and shading are part of the look. We tell you before you order.
Stains are hard to lift
Most weaves do not wipe clean. We suggest the room and the wall they suit.
Panels are fixed order
A mural is hung in sequence, so a damaged panel waits for a replacement from the maker.
Questions about grasscloth and murals
Can you hang a mural on a textured wall?
Only after the texture is skimmed flat. A mural shows every ridge, so the quote includes the skim and primer.
Why does the maker want a liner under grasscloth?
A liner evens the wall and can keep paste stains from showing at the seams. We follow the maker's instructions for the paper you chose.
Can you match a panel that arrived damaged?
No. We stop, photograph the damage and help you contact the maker. Panels are hung in order, so a reprint has to arrive first.
Planning a wall of natural paper or a mural?
Send the paper's name and a photo of the wall. We will say what the wall needs before you order.
